Clothing sizes can be misleading for several reasons, and the issue is prevalent in the fashion industry. Some of the key factors contributing to this problem include:
Lack of Standardization:
Vanity Sizing:
Regional and Cultural Variances:
Body Shape Diversity:
Material and Style Differences:
Changes in Manufacturing Processes:
Inconsistent Sizing Over Time:
Online Shopping Challenges:
I like to suggest when shopping for clothes online to measure some of your favorite clothing laying flat. I like to list these measurements so you can compare the two garments and have a better idea of how what you’re shopping for might fit. Most secondhand sellers will have no problem giving you these measurements and then you have less of a chance of the item not fitting you when you actually receive it, we all know how annoying it is to return stuff.
It's also really important to know your measurements. Companies that make garments first hand will usually have a size guide that you can compare your measurements to, which should help you get the exact size you need for your body.
Remember that you can play with the sizing of certain garments, sometimes wearing something oversized or shrunken can elevate your look by adding proportion and playfulness.
